Depression

Depression could be described as a state of intense sadness and despair that has advanced to the point where it is affecting the personal, family and social life of the individual. Depression can be mild, moderate or severe in intensity. Many people with depression don’t seek treatment. This is usually because they simply don’t recognize their illness as being treatable. Depression is treatable and should not be ignored. Set-backs in life such as financial loss, marital problems, and illness, all can give rise to depressive symptoms such as sadness, fatigue, and a general lack of interest. Depression can be overcome, but first the sufferer must regain control with professional help.

Many people experience reactive depression at some point in their lives. A death in the family or losing a job can be enough to set up the precondition for disappointment to become reactionary in the future. During a bout of reactive depression, a person can be irritable and preoccupied by what’s happened to them. But this dull mood usually lifts as they begin to recover. It is probably the most common type of depression.

Endogenous (unipolar) depression is when depression has its origins in the psyche. If an unpleasant life experience is responsible, it is most likely to have happened some time in the past. Endogenous depression can be chemical or biological in make-up as well as psychological and emotional. Fatigue can be an early symptom, with the individual frequently waking at intervals throughout the night. They may feel very low in the morning, finding even the most simplest of tasks impossible to do. This can make life very difficult for the sufferer; the depression is coming from within and is being nurtured and kept alive by the current program running in the subconscious.

Bipolar depression is a mood disorder that is characterized by the alternations of manic and depressive states. Its symptoms include those of endogenous depression. But there are also periods of mania during which the depression can create feelings of elation in the mind and body. This mania or elation, although pleasurable to experience, can be detrimental to health. Biological susceptibility to inheriting depression can be one cause. But additional factors like marital and work-related stresses must always also be considered. A person with no family history of bipolar may develop it, beginning perhaps with a reactive episode, followed by more episodes, until eventually the person has become both manic and depressive. People with very low self-esteem can be prone to this type of depression. Selfhypnosis is very effective in treating bipolar depression, but professional help must be sought first. This is most important!

Dysthymia is a mood disorder characterized by mild to moderate depression with symptoms of sadness, despair, engulfment, pessimism and loss of appetite. It typically develops in early adulthood and is more common in adult women. Often there is no obvious cause; but its symptoms can be brought on by anxiety, stress, illness, substance abuse, etc. It has the genetic ability to run in families, but is not as severe as other types of depression.
